Kentucky Route 9

Location: Wilder, Kentucky

This project required the construction of four tieback retaining walls to stabilize a landslide under Licking Pike. The KTC bid documents and specifications provided the design parameters, with the final design to be the responsibility of the contractor.

Richard Goettle, Inc. designed and constructed 572 rock socketed soldier piles, working atop a 25-foot wide bench with “Watson 2500” and “Watson 3100” drill rigs.

Seventeen hundred double corrosion protected seven-wire strand tieback anchors were installed in three rows along the wall. Tieback loads ranged up to 460 kips with lengths up to 90 feet. Forty-two anchors were permanently instrumented with load cells and/or survey points. The project required rerouting of traffic, existing pavement removal, shoulder reconstruction, paving, excavation and minor utility work in the vicinity of the construction area.
