Location – Ann Arbor, Michigan

A new building covering one block on the University of Michigan campus needed temporary earth retention to support surrounding streets and utilities. The depth of excavation exceeded 55’ in some areas. The tied back drilled-in soldier pile and wood lagging covered 64,000 square feet and required up to 4 levels of soil anchors. A sensitive utility tunnel crossed the site and was supported on both sides with the same earth retention system and used needle beams and the soldier piles to underpin it. The general soil profile included approximately 10’ of clay underlain by 60’ of medium compact silty sands.
