Driven steel sheet piling is a common method of sheeting and shoring. Rolled steel sheets, usually in a "Z" shape, are interlocked and driven with pile hammers or vibratory devices to depths as required by design, thus creating a continuous steel wall.
The wall can be cantilevered, internally braced or tied back as the excavation depth requires. Since the steel sheet piles are interlocking, water infiltration is kept to a minimum, making the system suitable within waterways or in an excavation which intercepts ground water. After serving its purpose, the sheet piles may be pulled and reused.
